Introduction Top

If you hear a cackle from the brush ... if you see a speck of steel blink in the shadows ... just run. The Tortured Undead has come to the Halcyon Fold, in search of salvation. But this creature, this man-no-longer-man, will rend and rip anything that stands between him and eternal rest. It's said a colossal sword pierces his chest, leaving a festering wound. He calls the blade Hellrazor, and he wants rid of it to release his soul, they say. And his horrifying, empty gaze sees only the Vain that might set him free.

Krul is a terrifying presence in the Halcyon Fold. Lurk in the brush, launch toward the vulnerable and use Dead Man's Rush to survive initial burst damage and stick to the target. From there, build up Weakness stacks with basic attacks and smite them to the grave. Use From Hell's Heart as an initiator or to prevent enemy escape.

Pros & Cons Top

PROS

  • Krul can prove to be a strong carry hero with a high damage potential.
  • He possess skills that does huge damage and decreases enemies' attack speed by a significant amount.
  • He can stun enemies from afar allowing easy ganking.
  • He is a carry hero with a decent early-game.

CONS

  • Krul is extremely fragile.
  • He also has no innate escape mechanism, making him extremely susceptible to ganks.
  • Krul requires quite a lot of farm to perform at his full potential.
  • Lacks the farming skill to clear out creep waves like other heroes may have.

Keep in mind that this guide is only a guideline on how to properly play the Tortured Undead. With every game, the scenario and situation changes. Adapting (falling under the category of common sense) to the game is an integral part of your success for not only playing Krul, but every other hero as well.

Crystal Build Top

Krul is very vulnerable as he has no skills that can help him escape. Thus , it is best to get 3 (Defense/Utility/Both) items that will either make Krul tankier, faster or both. Look at what your allies and enemies have bought and try to build your hero with items that would suit your team and at the same time counter your enemies.

Have a look at http://forums.vainglorygame.com/discussion/471/counter-build-customization/p1.

Krul has astounding skills that can land huge damage on enemies , therefore if built offensively , he should be built with either Crystal or Hybrid.

Build 1: Crystal Build

Weapon : 0%
Ability : 50%
Defense : 17%
Utility : 33%

Soloing Kraken: Possible

Starting Items

1. Ironguard Contract- Extra gold since Krul is a slow farmer.

2. Halcyon Potion (2) - Never leave home without one.

3. Scout Trap - For vision and trapping.

Middle Game
1. Sprint Boots
- Increases Speed by 0.3

2. Shatterglass
- 115 Crystal Power resulting in stronger abilities. It helps to amplify Krul's Crystal and Weapon damage (after getting Alternating Current) .

3. Sprint Boots-> Journey Boots
- Increases Max Health by 200 , Health Regen by 8 , Armor and Shield by 25 .Krul's escape mechanism and useful for chasing.

4. Alternating Current
- Adds 60 Crystal Power ,40% Attack Speed and every other basic attack deals 50 + 75% of your crystal power as bonus damage. Absolutely one of the best items for Krul . It gives him everything he needs : a massive speed bonus and damage.

Late Game
1. Shiversteel
- This is a great item on Krul, giving him additional survivability over his low, low life and gives you the ability to slow your opponents down which allows you to stack Weaknesses.

2. Eve of Harvest
- It gives you 25% Crystal Lifesteal , 50 Crystal Power , 250 Max energy and 5 Energy recharge. This item is critical for Krul since his abilities are his bread and butter and it also works beautifully with Spectral Smite allowing him to be sustainable in long battles.

3. Defense Item
- Purchase a defense item depending to the situation.

Rejected Items

1. Frostburn
- True, this is a great item as it slows enemies down and adds energy and all but it does not give Krul the survivability he needs. As mentioned earlier he needs at least 3 defence/utility/both items to help him survive. Shiversteel is absolutely the way to go. Krul will obtain the energy he needs from Eve of Harvest.

2. Broken Myth
- It's good but there's better. While this item can pierce through opponents shield , it does not give much Crystal power and does not give energy regeneration. Also, this item would not be much of a use against those who do not build Shield.

Hybrid Build Top

Weapon : 33%
Ability : 17%
Defense : 17%
Utility : 33%

Soloing Kraken: Possible

Starting Items

1. Ironguard Contract- Extra gold since Krul is a slow farmer

2. Halcyon Potion (2) - Never leave home without one

3. Scout Trap - For vision and trapping

Middle Game

1. Sprint Boots
- Increases Speed by 0.3

2. Tension Bow
- The interaction between this item and Krul is fantastic. It gives him 180 bonus damage per 5 seconds , 45 weapon power and 30% armor pierce, amazing synergy with Dead Man's Rush.

3. Sprint Boots -> Journey Boots
- Increases Max Health by 200 , Health Regen by 8 , Armor and Shield by 25 .Krul's escape mechanism and useful for chasing.

4. Tornado Trigger
- Grants 75% Attack Speed , 20% Critical Chance and 20% Critical Damage . This item is often build on Krul for a good reason : it helps to gather Weaknesses and with Krul's rapid attack speed together with his high damage, he should be smothering targets completely with Spectral Smite and additional criticals.

Late Game

1. Frostburn
- Frostburn is always a good item on Krul , granting him the energy pool that he needs. It gives 55 Crystal Power ,adds 250 to Max energy and increases Energy Regen by 5. Since Krul is a melee hero , the slow ability will allow you to chase your enemies.

2. Warhorn
-With its 30 % Cooldown Acceleration, +3 Energy Rechage , +10 Health Regen in addition to the Speed it gives, it helps farm and push with the security of knowing you are less likely to be ganked , thus "solving" Krul's greatest weakness - survivability. It can also be used for positioning and setting up ganks more successfully.

3. Defense Item
- Purchase a defense item depending to the situation.

Rejected Items

1. Alternating Current
-Without a Shatterglass , Krul will not benefit much from this item . The bonus damage from Tension Bow is good enough to annihilate your enemies.

2. Shiversteel
This is a useful item but it does not provide the energy pool that is mandatory for Krul. For this build, Frostburn will be a better choice.

Strategy Top

In no way, shape, or form should any walkthrough be followed strictly. Although the guide should give you a general idea of what you should be doing, game experience may change during online play; adapt to that change.

Grab your beginning items and head off to the jungle. You should prioritize farming . If one of your allies is jungling with you, sneak in into your enemies' domain but avoid battles at all cost. Krul is a slow farmer so you cannot afford to waste time. Once you learn From Hell's Heart at level 6 , you can start ganking your enemies . Nevertheless , you should kill creeps for gold when you have the chance. Krul can be victorious in any 1 vs 1 battles but it is hard for him to win if he is outnumbered as he has no AoE skills.

What You Need To Know

  • Krul is at home in the brush. Lurk there to charge up move speed, then run to a target.
  • Dead Man's Rush activates a barrier that will protect Krul as he engages the enemy. Use it wisely.
  • Use Spectral Smite to clear jungle monster camps and to take out the Gold Miner.
  • Watch out for burst-damage heroes and kiting heroes such as Petal and Ringo.

Tips For Playing Krul

  • Krul's most-common combo involves running from the brush with Shadows Empower Me, activating Dead Man's Rush to reach a high-value target and basic attacking to build up stacks for a Spectral Smite finish. If the hero runs, throw your sword to keep them in range.
  • Krul is viable building Weapon (attack speed), Utility (Shiversteel/Atlas Pauldron) and Crystal (Alternating Current). It all depends on your desired role in the match and your team composition. Also consider Reflex Block if a teammate isn't building Crucible for you.
  • The stun on From Hell's Heart is longer (up to 2.5 seconds) based on the distance the sword has travelled. That means if you throw the sword and hit a far-away hero (or better yet, hit a hero on the return flight), then the stun time will be longer!
