Introduction Top

Hello, thanks for reading my guide. I played vainglory since Vox was a new hero (I think it was 2015 January)
My main position is Lane.

This guide was written for

2.1

NOTE : This guide contains basics on how to lane, jungle and support with all heroes. Lance is the main hero in this guide, but the positions is the main topic!

Lance Top

Lance is an overall good hero. He's got good damage, good defence a lot of CC and ok mobility, and good in almost all matchups, he's got some few and small counters and counter many heroes that ave problems to close gaps like Krul and Reim. Lance is a very flexible pick. If you pick him first someone might try to counter him, then you can just switch the positions. Lance has a lot of base health and defense (nerfed) which makes him really tanky early game. In lane his wave clear is really good allowing him to rotate. If you go Wp lance you should be aware that the only piercing you can get from a t3 item is Tension Bow. Bonsaw is much harder to stack with lance because of his reduced attack speed from his heroic perk Partisan's Technique.

Partisan's Technique
Slot: Heroic Perk

Lance's basic attacks damage every target along their path. However, his attacks are slow to land and attack speed is less effective on him.

Instead of energy, Lance uses stamina to activate his abilities. Purchasing items with energy and energy regeneration increases his stamina and stamina regeneration.
  • Max Stamina: 100 + 30% Max Energy
  • Stamina Regen: 25 + 50% Energy Regen

This heroic perk gives him a lot of wave clear.

Impale
Slot: A

Lance lunges forward and strikes through his opponents, dealing weapon damage and rooting them in place (max 1.6s).
  • Overdrive: At max rank, ths ability also resets the cooldown of Combat Roll if Lance hits an enemy.
  • If this attack hits at least one enemy, Lance will immediately recover from the ability.
  • Deals reduced damage to minions.

This ability is a root with damage.
Tips when landing this ability

[*] He only cast it in front of himself. If you're standing on top of the target you won't hit
[*] This goes through walls, you can use this to escape or engage with surprise and style!
[*] This ability is easily jukeable, try hitting them in the middle of where they juke
[*] You get rooted if you miss the Impale , if you're afraid not to hit, wait for them to line up with minions before using it,

Gythian Wall
Slot: B

Lance smashes enemies back with his shield, dealing weapon damage and also stunning them if they collide with a wall or structure (max 1.6s). Afterward, he holds his shield steadfast, greatly reducing incoming damage from the target direction by up to 90%.
  • Overdrive: At max rank, Lance ignores all negative effects (from any direction) while this ability is active.
  • Damage reduction is 50% effective against turrets.
  • Passive: Lance strafes around the enemy he has most recently attacked. While strafing, he reduces damage from the target's direction by up to 50%.

This ability is one of the strongest in the game. You can peel so easily because of its super short cooldown. As a roamer it's not worth overdriving this before you've overdriven Impale because it only gives CC immunity. You wanna be protecting your carries, not yourself, but feel free to overdrive it after Impale

Combat Roll
Slot: C

Lance rolls in the target direction. His next basic attack within 2s will strike quickly, dealing bonus crystal damage.

Lance's ult isn't the best, but it gives you more mobility under the fight. It makes it easier to body block and peel for your allies.

Pros
    Good damage
    A lot of CC
    Good defence

Cons
[*] Roots himself when missing impale
[*] Impale is easily dodged by heroes with dashes and leaps.

Carry (Laner) Top

The carrys role is to do as much damage as possible and take little as well. Laners are squishy carries who farm in the lane. In the lane you receive more gold than in the jungle, in the jungle you gain more experience.
Laners usually rely on items to deal damage rather than upgrading abilities. If you're an early game laner you should focus on pushing the lane and once the jungler clears the second heal minion, rotate down to help them fight. If you have a strong early game jungler and you know they can win the 2v2 without help, make sure the other laner doesn't rotate, that way you can get gold while pressuring the other laner. Don't get soloed in lane, don't try pressuring the enemy laner if they go early game laners like Ringo, then you might get soloed.

Avoid pressuring the enemy laner if you don't see the jungle duo on the minimap. If you see them fighting, clear the big minion before harassing or potentially killing. If you're a late game hero, avoid fighting and harassing, try farming instead. If you avoid fighting your jungle is probably going to invade it, so make sure to tell your teammates if the enemy laner is rotating.

Wave clear threats

Bigger gun than phinn|Drr|Pusher
Even though his wave clear is very strong it doesn't mean he's going to be able to rotate because he's slow and it doesn't mean he's going to be effective if not build around a specific comp!

Fire|Aaand Fire|Mage
If you wanna push lane to rotate, use goop, but don't use goop to last hit. Skaarf should be focusing on farming rather than harrassing.

Sustain|Hard to gank|Last hit while poking
You can clear with auto attacks, making you not use much energy, not that you use it!

Captain (Support or roamer) Top

The supports task is to protect the laner from dying. They do this by buying utility items like Crucible which blocks cc for all surrounding allies and Fountain of Renewal which restores health based on missing health or peel buff and heal your carry.

Supporting your carry

Supports almost always go Fountain of Renwal in any matchup. In higher levels getting fountain as early as possible is crucial. Then you can start a fight and the fountain will make it much easier to win the fight if you're the first with the fountain. Some people prefer buying less vision in the early game to get more gold. In soloQ it doesn't matter as much because most players don't realize that you have a fountain while the enemies don't.

Crucible isn't always necessary if the enemy don't have much cc. This item is really straight forward, it gives health and blocks cc.

Engaging in teamfights is important, especially when they have heroes that rely on poke to deal damage like and . Don't get poked too much, the carries are probably trying to stack Breaking Point or Broken Myth

Body blocking can be done by standing in front of your carries and preventing them from being shot. Body block when you're against Kestrel, Skye, Skaarf and Samuel. Be careful as Samuel can use drifting dark and make it harder for you to body block by splashing damage onto your carries, same with Kestrel, if she goes CP Glimmershot will deal damage through you and to your carry. When up against a CP Vox, don't kill your teammates by standing next to him, he is easy to counter.

Ganking is to ambush a hero. Not all supports are good at ganking. Having supports that are bad at ganking doesn't mean you can't gank, junglers can help to gank, but here I will only be going through the roamers invidually.

Lyra has almost no cc to gank the enemy laner. Her Bright Bulwark can only snare enemies and she have to be close to them as well, her only way to instantly close the gap is by using Arcane Passage which she gets at level 6. She can only slow a little but that's about it.

Lance is really good at ganking, he's got Impale which roots and Gythian Wall which stuns if pushed into a wall.

Flicker is good at ganking. He's got a really annoying slow and a root. Use the slow to make the root easier to land.

Ardan is OK at ganking. He's got diving potential and a slow from vanguard. He can also easily engage on the enemy laner.

Fortress he's got a little burst in the early game with Truth of the Tooth, he can also boost allies movement speed.

Catherine is great at ganking. She can close the gap with Merciless Pursuit and stun them.

Phinn he's not that great at ganking unless the enemy laner is overextending. He can gank well afternoon level 6, but that's gonna take a while.

Adagio can do a lot of damage early and buff your teammates.

Remember to get vision!! Buy scout traps and flares. Place Scout Trap places where players walk past but not on normal walking paths.

Jungler Top

The jungle is all about ganking, invading and jungle timers. The minions spawn at 00:35 and they re spawn 55 seconds after they've been defeated. Try clearing the jungle as fast as possible and clearing the camps on timer. When you've cleared you can gank or invade if you were faster and know when the enemy laner will rotate down. If you're going early game, try setting up aggressive scout traps in the enemies bush, don't go further than the middle heal camp after the minion miners have spawned. It will be WAY harder to invade. When they spawn, focus on farming quick and ganking the enemy laner making them fall behind. As the game progresses you should get a lead because of this. The jungles play much more different depending on when they get their power spikes.

Early game junglers
Fast Clear|High Burst|Let's play in the early game. Let's run faster!
One of the strongest early game junglers if not the strongest

<3 Baron|Kite like a Bo$$|Fast clear
She is especially good early against slow heroes who lack dashes or are stationary targets like krul, reim and kestrel

Late game junglers

Hit me again|Tanky|Lifesteal
He might be a god, or he might suck depending on matchup. If he's up against mobile targets his only way of killing them Is to lock them down with your ult

Dive|Burst|First kiss
He's so good at killing squishy targets, it harder to peel him away because of his ult. He can Dive the back line as fast as he can steal your girlfriend.

Thanks for reading my guide! Top
