Gwen Introduction Top

Gwen is a speedy character that can put out huge chunks of damage and immediately flee to safety. Her abilities are perfectly suited for a lane character, and her poke should not be underestimated. She can be effective with Crystal power and Weapon power, however after using her in just a couple matches I can see that Crystal power currently has an advantage.

Gwen does not have many passive effects that make Weapon power extremely effective, like Baron. With CP, like most heroes, Gwen becomes very ability focused. Her A and C abilities have significant CP ratios which allow Gwen to output serious damage.

Please remember that Gwen is a new character, and further updates or information could make other build paths more effective. This build is based on my personal experiences, and has worked well for me in casual matches.

Gwen's Abilities Top

Gwen's heroic perk, Boomstick allows her basic attack to gain additional damage every 1.6 seconds. Attack speed decreases the cooldown for this empowered attack.
- We won't focus on this heroic perk very much as CP, however this perk is what allows Weapon power to be a viable path. It is very useful in the lane for poking your direct opponent and securing your farm.

Gwen's A ability, Buckshot Bonanza is CP Gwen's main source of consistent and powerful damage. This is an AOE ability and damages all targets in a cone. Enemies hit by the ability are also slowed and revealed for 2 seconds. Crystal power increases the damage, and the Overdrive of this ability decreases the cooldown and increases the slow placed on enemies.
- This ability is great poking enemies. The range is fairly large and the slow is very annoying. The ability is also great for checking bushes for enemies, as any enemy touched by the attack is "flared" for a short time. The AOE damage, slow and reveal make this ability strong, and it should be overdriven as soon as possible.

Gwen's B ability, Skedaddle is essentially a de-buff/sprint. Gwen instantly removes negative effects and blocks further effects for .5 seconds. The passive for this ability gives Gwen extra innate move-speed, which is disabled upon taking damage.
- Wow, this is such a strong ability. We have yet to see a similar ability so it will be interesting to see how this ability will be used in different situations. This ability is perfect for laning, as it allows Gwen to escape from ganks with ease. The passive is also excellent, as it allows Gwen to rotate into jungle more frequently, to assist with team fights. Though this ability is strong, there is no obvious reason to overdrive the ability other than an enhanced speed boost. I would not recommend overdriving this ability.

Gwen's C ability, Aces High is a fairly normal ultimate attack. It does damage to everything it passes through, and stuns any enemies that are struck by the card.
- This ability will not change the tides of the game, but it can be used to pick off a Kraken, finish off an enemy or stun an opponent out of their ultimate. The stun duration and damage increase with the overdrive, so I would level this ability up as high as possible.

Build Explanation Top

Starting off: To start off, purchase a Crystal Bit and some potions. This will increase the damage on Buckshot Bonanza, which will help with poking and farming. Remember to auto attack the laner when your passive is up, as the damage adds up over time.

Step 1: At the first shop, you will want to purchase a Heavy Prism, Eclipse Prism and an Energy Battery, as well as a T1 defensive item if need be. I hold off on purchasing boots here, as Gwen's passive is a good substitute.

Step 2: After farming and some early team fights, you will purchase a Shatterglass and some Sprint Boots. This is where your damage starts to ramp up, and you should get your ultimate around this time. You are now a viable threat in the lane and in team fights. You will also want to purchase or upgrade your armor, depending on your opponent or the enemy doing the most damage.

Step 3: Your next T3 item will be an Aftershock. This will provide some more consistency to your damage output, as it will not be just your A and C abilities doing more significant damage. This will also reduce your cooldown, which is great for Gwen.

Step 4: Your next main item will be a Broken Myth, which steadily amplifies your damage over time. After 2-3 pokes with your A ability, your ultimate will be a force to be reckoned with.

Step 5: At this point, you will need to decide if you are not doing enough damage or not staying alive long enough to output your damage. If your damage is adequate, purchase an additional defensive item. If you are effectively staying alive throughout fights, purchase a Clockwork. The damage amplification and extreme cooldown will allow you to put out significant damage very consistently. You will also want to complete your Halcyon Chargers, which give you further cooldown, energy and a longer sprint.

Defensive options: Build defense as you see necessary. Counter-build your style opponent or the enemy that is consistently doing the most damage.

Gwen Tips and Tricks Top

- Don't get overconfident. Though your B ability can help you successfully survive a gank attempt, it is not a guarantee. It is beneficial to push your lane minions into the opponents turret, but don't stay on the enemy half of the lane too long, as the Skedaddle sprint is a short duration, and enemies may have the chance to catch up.

- Stay on the outskirts of fights. Gwen's Buckshot Bonanza can do damage to all enemies in the cone of effect, but if you get caught in the thick of a fight you will have a very hard time. Similar to a Skaarf or Celeste, treat Gwen as a longer range mage, who has some very potent "poke" abilities.

- Rotate in the early game! After clearing your first two rounds of minions in the lane, see if your team is nearing the middle of the jungle, and may be caught in an early fight. With Gwen's speedy passive, you will more easily be able to rotate into jungle to give your team the early advantage.
