Hello All!

Welcome to my Grumpjaw guide. I’ll be outlining what I believe to be a good build for Grumpjaw, as well as discussing his abilities and providing a few tips. This serves as a great entry level build for beginners or those looking to learn Grumpjaw due to the high survivability. Hopefully this can help you get started if you are looking to dive into the Fold with Grumpjaw!

Introduction Top

Grumpjaw is currently the newest jungler addition to the Halcyon Fold (update 2.2) and is a gassy beast of gargantuan proportions. Literally, he farts frequently and takes up massive space when hiding in brush (it's quite funny actually). As of now, he has the highest utility out of any hero thanks to the slow from his A ability and his game-changing Ultimate. He also has excellent gap closing ability coupled with a heroic perk that increases his defense, something extremely useful for the earlier phases of the game in particular, making him harder to kill.

Skills and Abilities Top

Living Armor - Slot : Heroic Perk

Grumpjaw’s heroic perk grants him exceptional defense to boot. This will come in handy during the earlier phases of the game when builds are more meager and defense is low for your opponents. It gives you a nice edge. Always make sure to keep 5x stacks up at all times. During late game, the main function of your heroic perk is to provide the bonus damage for your A ability in addition to the sizable armor and shield boost. The number of stacks you currently have show up as white bars beneath your health bar.

Grumpy - Slot : A

Stats
Range : 10/10/10/10/10
Damage : 75/125/175/225/325 (50% Crystal Ratio)
Stack : 20/35/50/65/95 (10% Crystal Ratio)
Slow : 55%/55%/55%/55%/55%

Grumpy is your first resource for gap closing and can be used either defensively and offensively. You can charge out of the jungle for an ambush or charge away from a pursuing enemy, depending on the situation. It's always good to make sure you are tracking enemy movement and charge to a location whereby the enemy will be stuck in front of you. Gauge the distance and the enemy's current direction to make sure you tap the right spot. You don't want to tap right on top your enemy and you don't want to overshoot it, you want them just in front of you.

After charging your enemies, Grumpy deals damage to anyone standing in front of Grumpjaw, as well as some bonus damage based on the amount of Living Armor stacks that are up, and lastly providing a momentary slow to anyone hit. You almost always want to open a fight with this ability, and used it anytime an enemy is attempting to put distance between them and you. Note that this is a non-targeted ability, so after you use it you need to target who you want to take down. Overdrive second.

Hangry - Slot : B

Stats
Damage : 5/25/45/65/85 (80% Crystal Ratio)
Attack Speed : 60%/75%/90%/105%/135%
Bonus Speed Duration : 4/4/4/4/5

Hangry is what will help you mow down minions in the lane / jungle and pursue enemy heroes with a vengeance. For any WP based build, this is Grumpjaw's most useful ability because of the nice attack speed bonus. When you use it, Grumpjaw will charge your target, damage them, and then gain bonus damage and attack speed for a period of time. Always best to use right after you open up with Grumpy. Note that you need to be in fairly close proximity of your target in order to activate this skill. Overdrive this first.

Stuffed - Slot : C

Stats
Damage : 400/500/700 (200% Crystal Ratio)
Stun Duration : 3/3/3

The fun begins. Hands down, Stuffed is the most strategically useful skill in the game, but you need to know when to use it. It’s utility outweighs its damage output in my opinion, so you want to reserve it for tactical value. Use it to swallow up a fleeing enemy and spit him out in the opposite direction. It’s particular useful in group fights, just pick which enemy hero is proving to be the most deadly for your team, swallow him up, and spit him out away from the fight. Maybe a group fight has broken out and you notice a vulnerable enemy hero. Eat them up and spit them out next to your allies for a good steam rolling. Perhaps you got enemy heroes that are applying a lot of pressure and are playing deep, swallow them and spit them out near a friendly turret or your crystal miner. This will induce instant panic, and in your opponent’s frantic flight, you can run him or her down. You can also use this ability to disrupt enemy hero Ultimates or interrupt an enemy incursion on jungle objectives.

Note that the radius for this skill is significantly smaller than Grumpy, and you need to make sure you hit your enemy in order to swallow them. Again, it's about anticipation and tapping the right spot. You can charge up to them with Grumpy and then crash into with with Stuffed to put them in Grumpjaw’s belly. There is a slight delay after you do land a successful Ultimate before Grumpjaw swallows the enemy hero, so plan accordingly. Do not use if you are outnumbered or vulnerable, or if there is simply no reason to. Also, be careful in big group fights as you will release your prey early if you take damage.

Shop Item Build Top

The main idea of this build is to make Grumpjaw an unstoppable tank with defensive items while giving him a nice base damage boost with Sorrowblade in addition to Stormcrown to help you dominate the jungle and level up quickly. Also a help in capturing Kraken and taking out crystal miners (jungle objectives). With your high health and defense, this gives you a high level of solo-ability. Provided you got max stacks of Living Armor, you will already be doing bonus damage with your A ability and gaining additional weapon damage and attack speed with your B ability. The rest of the shop items are really for giving Grumpjaw a nice BIG health pool with high defense. Before long, you will be strutting around the Fold like a boss, dictating the course of battles, and mowing down enemy heroes like it’s going out of style. You will also be EXTREMELY tough to take down.

In total (with full Living Armor stacks included), this build gives you a whopping 1500 health boost in addition to 220 armor and 210 shield. You also have the team-wide reflex block and sprint from Crucible and War Treads respectively, further increasing your team utility.

In terms of build order, you want to go for Heavy Steel first to give your base damage a boost. After that, save gold for Stormcrown so you can become more efficient at farming the jungle. Afterwards, you want to work towards Sorrowblade and then War Treads, lastly Crucible. Around mid-game, you want to pick-up Kinetic Shield and Coat of Plates, saving third tier equivalents for last, prioritizing Aegis. Always make sure to carry at least two Halcyon Potion if you have an open slot, and keep Weapon Infusion up if your build is maxed out and you got the extra gold. If team fights are getting long or if you need the extra WP, you can sacrifice Stormcrown or a defensive item for Breaking Point, depending whether you need the armor or shield more.
