I've been having a lot of success with a heavily armored Krul of late. His weakness stacks and spectral smite already make him quite tanky... Plus, with his increased movement speed (from Shadows Empower Me) and high burst DPS & stun, Krul is an excellent initiator but, as a result, quite often the focus of enemy DPS. This is why I decided to build Armor/Shield, Health and Health regen over WP or CP.

Here are the items that work for me & why:

Tornado Trigger The key stat here is the increase in your attack speed (+75%). For Krul this means building weakness stacks 75% faster and therefore more life steal (200 per swing once you're fully equipped and at 8 weakness stacks) and the opportunity to use Spectral Smite for additional and instant health regen! Great for your survivability!!

Serpent Mask offers increased weapon power and 20% lifesteal. Adds to your already excellent survivability!

Journey Boots Besides the much needed increase in speed (a lot of people will start running when they realise your health isn't budging...), Journey boots give you additional health, health regen, shield and armor.

Metal Jacket negates a large proportion of basic attack damage and a lesser amount of damage sustained by abilities. If the enemy team is building crystal power, I'd swap metal jacket for Aegis

Crucible 700 hp, making you stand upright for longer! Not to mention reflex block for you and your team mates (this blocks 200 damage for 1.2 seconds)

Fountain of Renewal 200 hp, 13 regen, 60 shield, 30 armor and a healing power (5hp per % of missing health).

With these items, at level 12, you'll have between 2,521 - 2,721 HP (1,421 base + 1,100-1,300 from items) not to mention an insane amount of armor (or shield) and health regen.

Note: I have found that energy can become a problem and so I sometimes swap one of the above items for Frostburn or Eve of Harvest. Whichever one offers the least assistance in the game!
