More details and explanations about capable roles for each build base on http://forums.vainglorygame.com/index.php?threads/89767/

Introduction Top

Hello and welcome to my guide. I'm Zachary Freeman. My greatest achievement in 3v3 ranking system is Simply Amazing Silver. What you are reading is a 4 in 1 guide for Catherine - my favourite Vainglory character. Because I like her so much, I try my best to exploit her flexibility so that she can fit into as many roles as possible.

This guide is updated to version 3.2 and specifically designed for 3v3 game mode.

Before we continue to the main part, that is all I would like to remind you about. Please don't criticise my hard work only because you cannot find the guide helpful in 5v5 game mode. Now everything is good, so let's get started!

Tanky Captain Top

Tactic Analysis

Your overall mission is to attract as much damage to yourself as possible. Be the first one to engage in clash, the first one to fall for your team, but the last one to flee away. In case your team is splitted, always stick to your carry until you are sured that he/she is 100% safe.

In my opinion, item build strategy for Tanky Captain is the most complexed among Catherines.

Item Explanation

Fountain of Renewal is undisputedly your first tier 3 item to be completed. Then, Contraption is the next must buy item. Indeed, it gives too many advanatges - vision, bonus max health, bonus energy recharge and cooldown speed. However, if the need for team defence is too high, you can definitely skip it until your team is safely protected.

Crucible and Atlas Pauldron are both necessary but not always compulsory. In some cases, you can skip either or both of them to get some more situational items. Check them out in "More Offensive Items" and "More Defensive Items" lists.

Now I explain a bit about some of my suggested situational items. Bonesaw amplifies WP damage from your teammate and is exclusively effective when both your laner and jungler take on WP path. Both Poisoned Shiv and Spellfire bring doom to enemies who rely on health barriers or fortified health. However, only buy those listed items when you have made sure that neither of your teammates have bought them.

Despite your superman-like durability, you are not invincible. When you estimate that an enemy has gained enough power to surpass your competence, don't hesitate buying more self-defence items. Slumbering Husk, Aegis and Metal Jacket will definitely help you overcome the situation. Prolonging your life also means having more time to protect your teammates.

Further Notice

Max Stormguard to be more tanky. Max Blast Tremor for better cooldown. Skip level 5 ability point to upgrade both Stormguard and Blast Tremor at level 6.

Crystal Carry Top

Tactic Analysis

You are about to experience an extremely hard time in laning phase - melee hero, easy to be dominated, difficult to last hit minions, but still need to get as many stacks as possible to be prepared for your late game since most of the time you shall not purchase any defensive items. For you, offence is the best defence. With Aftershock and Eve of Harvest, the only way you could heal yourself is by damaging your enemies.

From my point of view, Crystal Carry is currently the least favourable strategy for Catherine.

Item Explanation

Why rush for Aftershock and Clockwork first? - To get as many stacks as possible. Besides, Aftershock helps maintain your health.

As I have mentioned above, Eve of Harvest sustains your life as long as you deal CP damage. And why early Halcyon Chargers? - Improve cooldown speed, of course!

The ideal item for your 6th slot is Frostburn, as its combination with Spellfire leaves your target no chance to escape. Never seen a Catherine kiting her enemy before? - Now you will see. It is fun watching your prey hopelessly drags himself away from you while you're only a few steps away waiting for your abilities to cooldown. And you give him another 0.9s stun, wait 0.6s for Aftershock to cooldown, then pop up your bubble, hit him to reactivate Aftershock. Now he cannot do any harm while you have your bubble on and you just slightly step away from him. Don't forget that although you have stepped away, your Spellfire still burns him, thus makes your Frostburn work, and your Clockwork too.

Further Notice

Max Merciless Pursuit for more stuns and better mobility. Max Stormguard for better farming and to be more tanky. Strongly need a lane babysitter and must complete early + mid items to fully function. Skip level 5 ability point to upgrade both Stormguard and Blast Tremor at level 6.

...

Weapon Jungler Top

Tactic Analysis

To be honest, you are quite independent in jungling phase. Unless you got invaded by enemies' jungler(s), your captain can leave you farm freely from the beginning. With Stormguard that deals decent aoe damage since level 1 and later Merciless Pursuit at level 3, you got more than enough tools in hand.

As far as I am concerned, Weapon Jungler is the squishiest among Catherines, even in late game.

Item Explanation

Spellsword and Poisoned Shiv give you what an early ganker need - damage, attack speed, mortal wound, cooldown speed and energy recharge to re-execute your performances over and over again in the shortest time possible.

Breaking Point gives a massive amount of damage, which is boosted even faster by Tornado Trigger later on. Moreover, both of them also provide a huge improvement on attack speed. So why shall we choose attack speed over damage? - Because of Spellsword, remember? However, in case you would like to get higher damage but still maintain cooldown speed and energy recharge, I recommend that you should replace Spellsword + Journey Boots with Sorrowblade + Halcyon Chargers

Echo helps create your most vicious late game combo, which is: Hide in bush - Blast Tremor on a single prey for 2s silence - Chase after him with a few hits - Let him taste the bitterness of 2x Merciless Pursuit for 1.8s - Slice him to death.

If you sense too many threats from your enemies, a more sustainable strategy may make you feel safer. Try taking Shiversteel instead of Echo, more attack speed and a lot more bonus health.

Further Notice

Max Merciless Pursuit for extra hits, longer stuns and chasing down target. Max Stormguard for early jungling and to be more tanky. Heavily depends on team's cover in combats due to lack of reliable self-defence.

...

Raged Disruptor Top

Tactic Analysis

You are a lane carry. You start off the game in a very similar way to the Crystal Carry strategy, however, the moment you are able to be left alone comes much sooner. Your duties include gaining more stacks whenever your Merciless Pursuit and Blast Tremor are off cooldown, blocking as much damage as possible while having your Stormguard on, and isolating their carry in combats.

From my experience, Raged Disruptor Catherine is the hardest strategy to be pulled off sucessfully.

Item Explanation

Your options for items are considered the narrowest because you only focus on items that improve cooldown speed. There are only 7 items with this function and you simply need to pick 6 of them. Whatever your choices are, the feeling of your unlucky targets will certainly be miserable. With your non-stop stuns, bubbles and silences, they won't be able to mess with either you or your teammates.

Other than that, you are an absolute Jack of all trades and a naturally born team fighter. Alone you cannot make any impacts because you only got a little of everything: decent bonus WP from Spellsword, some bonus CP from Clockwork and Aftershock, bonus true damage from Stormcrown, and a bit passive damage from the Scout Traps provided by Contraption.
So what is the most impressive thing you are capable of doing? - Take down the Kraken on your own.

Further Notice

Max Merciless Pursuit for more stuns and better mobility. Max Stormguard to be more tanky. Need a lane babysitter until finish rushing for Stormcrown to farm alone. Rely on the damage dealt by your teammates to eventually win the game, which means both your jungler and captain must be able to inflict damage. Skip level 5 ability point to upgrade both Stormguard and Blast Tremor at level 6.

Conclusion Top

Here we are after going around 4 very different and unique strategies for Catherine. How do you think about those ideas? Do you think any of them sound reasonable? Or are they all just a waste of time? Anyway, whether you agree or disagree, I am still grateful to you for spending time reading my guide. Wish you would have lots of luck and fun in your future games.

If you really appreciate my guide, don't forget to vote, comment and share it to your friends. Once again, I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart. Ladies and gentlemen, my 4 in 1 guide for Catherine is now ended.
