Disclaimer: I as a player do not use scout traps and flares so I do not include them in the guide as I consider them a waste of gold and I can not use them effectively if you want to use them feel free.
AS the Captain you want to start with an oakheart and sprint boots, and regularly rotate to the lane to apply pressure and harass the enemy laner. when you have around 1000 gold, head home and pick up life spring, a light shield, and a oakheart. Rinse and repeat till you have enough to buy a life spring. at this point you can generally tell how the enemy is building and how to counter. if they have lots of crystal, build toward an aegis, weapon metal jacket or burst a slumbering husk. note this build is more "selfish" and building towards more for you, the reason is, it is better that way!!! if you can not hold you own for a long while you are not to helpful, you do not deal much damage. so stay alive and stun, root, and otherwise give good positioning for your team. In the end you will have generally a fountain of renewal, a aegis and/or a metal jacket, journey boots, slumbering husk and/or crucible, with one offensive item, sorrow blade for better impale damage, shatterglass for better gythian wall defense, or storm crown for more damage.
IMPALE
Impale is the skill that brings power to lances kit. It is difficult to land though as its hit area is smaller than is looks, but deals a substantial amount of damage and provides a useful root. It works well with joule's big red button and abilities like that.
GYTHIAN WALL
The most useful and interesting ability as it allows you to knock enemies away from you for breathing room toward your allies and stun them if a wall is handy. the trick is knowing when and how to use it, you want to try to knock them towards ally abilities and away from weak allies or into walls to stun. Be warned it is harder than is seems. with good timing you can also block abilitys like ringo's hellfire brew, kestrals one shot one kill,even stuns and silences like from Vox and Cathrine. the strafe can be used to limit the amount of damage you receive and with some crystal is much more effective.
COMBAT ROLL
This ability is mainly to get better positioning for your other abilities. You can also dive through certain walls I don't know all of them but you can experiment by yourself in practice. this can also be used to avoid effect like porcupine mortar verse of judgement and even yummy catnip frenzy. the best thing about this is it's low cooldown allowing you to use many times in a fight to get better positioning.
