Take To The Skye-s: Lane Top

Hello everyone, my name is Scapechild! Skye was recently released and there are quite a few people who don't understand, or at least don't grasp how to use her correctly. I am hoping that after you read through this guide, you will have a better understanding of her. I understand that some people may agree or disagree with me, but I have had great success with Skye since the first match I tried and I am giving you the in-depth guide on how I use her and what I build. She has only just been released so at some point there may be a build change, but for now, here is my guide for Skye.

For the purposes of this guide I will be keeping the team as if it were 1 jungle, 1 roam, and 1 lane. To get things started, I recommend getting Sprint Boots and 2 Halcyon Potion. Skye has a base movement speed of 3.1. The only other heroes with this low of a base movement speed is Ringo and SAW. Skye is most effective at chasing enemies, and her entire kit relies on movement. Not only will the sprint boots grant you the movement speed increase that you need to keep up early game, it will also provide you an escape since Skye is a squishy hero. I recommend for all abilities, that you follow the point distribution path that I placed below.

Remember to always think about your positioning, both with yourself, and your enemies. For this guide I will be talking as if Skye is in her proper role of lane, and not a jungle Skye. Stay back at the first health minion in the jungle and help your jungle and roam quickly kill it, however do NOT take the last hit. You are trying to speed their progress through the jungle so they can reach the jungle shop first and have the advantage over the enemy team. Then you move to the lane. There are 3 heroes to worry about in the lane, IF that enemy know what they are doing. Those enemies are Vox, SAW, and Celeste. If you are laning against SAW or Vox (Note that I did not include Celeste) do not follow this next part.

Run right past all the minions, shoot once for target lock on your enemy hero, and then Forward Barrage down his throat. This will easily take any laner down by over 75% of their health. Immediately afterwards, do not chase. If they stood their ground you stand yours. Your Halcyon Potion should keep you live enough to throw a second forward barrage on them if they stick around that long, which they almost always will NOT. This tactic will scare them out of their lane position and allow you to handle your lane without much harass. The intimidation here will keep them at bay.

If you ARE against a SAW (note I did not say Vox) then what you need to do is play defensively until you reach level two. Put target lock on him (don't go in for it if he has his Spin Up) and then, when he tries to hit you with his Suppressing Fire, Suri Strike to the side of him (not to the other side of him) and Forward Barrage while he is stuck there. If he is even a little smart, he will Rodie Run away. If you try to man fight him from behind because you did Suri Strike behind him, he will wreck your health in a couple seconds and secure the kill with his Rodie Run stab. This is a fight you will not win, but if you are at the side you can pop your sprint boots, if it is necessary.

If you are going against Vox then you need to play as defensive as you can. Forward barrage him when he makes mistakes. If he steps to the side of his minions, target lock and Forward Barrage. Be ready to cancel because he can and will Sonic Zoom out of the way. You aren't going for the kill, you are trying to keep him away as best as possible. Vox is biggest counter to Skye there is and he will win if you haven't made sure to exploit his mistakes. Watch your positioning as his attacks are going to bounce off the minions to you. Remember you don't have to jump a long distance for a Suri Strike. Sometimes tapping right where you are or just ever slightly behind you or to the sides to fire off the missiles is the best thing. They can miss because they judge where a hero is going to be, so once again punish him for mistakes. See if there are times when he just stops his movement for an attack or two and use that for Suri Strike opportunities.

*****NEW SECTION*****
With Skye it can seem as if she may not be a good laner to some. The problem is that you she has her short range to work with, or you can use her Forward Barrage and then you end up pushing the lane. For this next part you need to look at who you are laning against. There are two heroes that change how you should handle the lane. Normally you should poke in for last hits, letting the lane get pushed towards your turrets, and use your Forward barrage from a distance, hitting one or two minions at the end of its range. This will keep you from getting shot up by someone like SAW or Petal who have a much longer attack range. When the minions get close to your turret, push the lane back a bit, by clearing out the minions. Easiest to do this is basic attack the middle-most minion, Suri Strike (remember you don't have to move anywhere you can just click where you are at) and then Forward Barrage. The Suri Strike will hit all the minions (or at least most of them) and then your Forward Barrage can finish the stragglers. This will keep your turret from receiving much damage, it will maximize your cs at this point since your basic attack probably won't be enough to get the kill with a turret wrecking the minions. Utilize this method to pull and push the lane and keep the minions closer to your side, letting you use that turret as added defense.

The two heroes that change this whole thing, would be Skaarfungander and Celeste. Do to the nature of their abilities, you have to play it differently. When laning against these two, do not poke in and out. Stay as close to the outside of your basic attack range as possible but try not to leave that range. Because of their abilities you won't push the lane with your basic attacks. They'll keep up with you. It might get pushed a little but it's not a problem, I'll cover that in a second. What you need to do is maximize the movement potential gained from your heroic perk. Even with no addition to your attack speed, you can land two basic attacks during the time your heroic perk is giving you a speed boost. (You will need to use trial and error to get the hang of the timing) Remember the movement bonus doesn't work well going backwards. The point is to strafe around the minions back and forth. Go in a wide, circling arc, and try not to go forward towards it. Side ways, in an arc. I cannot stress this enough. The increased movement speed and strafing maneuvers should make it extremely easy to dodge their abilities. Last Skaarf I went up against, didn't hit me with a single Spitfire in lane, and Celeste is the same. If you start to see yourself pushing the lane too much throw up the white "All Together" ping in the lane, signaling for your team to come help out, then back up and let the Skaarf push the lane back. By the time your teammates get up there, he should be about halfway back up the lane. Your teammates will sit in the bushes as always, you get your movement speed going and as soon as he throws a fireball at you, strafe in the circle maneuver towards him, basic attack, Suri Strike to close the distance (do not put yourself between him and his turret, you can Suri in front of him too) and then Forward Barrage while your teammates help finish the job. It's an easy kill. If you are not pushing the lane because their abilities are wrecking the minions, wait for the Spitfire or Heliogenesis, then do the same maneuver to get in there and take them out.

However! With Celeste make sure you don't Suri Strike close to her. Maneuver around and Forward Barrage from above her. When she goes to stun you with Core Collapse, that's when you Suri Strike to get out of the way. (she will probably try this before you even start the Forward Barrage, just make sure you are ready to get out of the stun and close the distance.
*****END OF NEW SECTION*****

Now for her heroic perk, you need to make sure that you have your movement speed bonus as much as possible and no matter who you lane against, keep constant movement. Once you are ready to purchase some more items here are the next few, in order, that you should get. Crystal Bit, Light Armor, Swift Shooter, and Oak Heart. Make sure you still have at least 2 Halcyon Potions. From here you need to look at how the team is doing overall. Is the enemy team starting to group together more often? If so join your companions and stay behind your roam. If they aren't, and your team is doing well, stay in the lane a little longer and enjoy a bit more farm. Whenever fights occur, your role is to take out the key targets. Take out their carries first before their roam. Aim for their ranged carry if they have one. When you reach lvl 6 you will have your full arsenal to work with. Here is where you can start working on your advanced tactics.

1v1 - When facing someone 1v1 you will have both the advantage and disadvantage at the same time. Kiting, especially with your Forward Barrage is an extremely useful tool of hers, however not all enemies will be so aggressive and reckless as to be baited into that. There is a full force combo that you can do to extinguish almost any foe in 1v1. Here is the key to Skye's full devastation. Target lock the enemy with a basic attack, when they get close, place your ultimate right behind them. The moment they fire upwards, Suri Strike behind the enemy past ult ult markers. Their auto movement of their targeting will cause them to turn and immediately move under your ultimate. This will stun them when it strikes. The moment your Suri Strike is finished, before that stun even starts, hit them with Forward Barrage. The full force of of your ult and forward barrage will devastate anyone in a 1v1.

1v2 - This is be far most difficult situation for Skye. You best chances are to use your ult to cut off one of the attackers and try to kite the other while using Forward Barrage. Being squishy, a 1v2 is an extremely dangerous situation. a well placed stun or even slow can be more than enough to take you out. Under NO circumstance should you try to Suri Strike behind an enemy to get away. You will be hit during your travel and they will turn around automatically which will actually close some of the gap. The only time this isn't true is if you can get to the other side of a wall. Do know that if you fail in the slightest, you will run into the wall and you are more likely to be defeated.

1v3 - run... as fast as you can. Forward barrrage behind you before you sprint. use your ult to create a barrier, but whatever you do get out of there.

Roam Fodder - I call this roam fodder. Let the melees attack your roam and then you use your ult right on them. The cluster will protect your roam and usually catch at least 2 enemies due to them not paying attention. While they are being bombarded you should already be laying waste with your Forward Barrage.

The next items you should be getting are Piercing Shard, Lifespring, Coat of Plates, and Blazing Salvo, Travel Boots and then no longer run with a potion and instead get a Heavy Prism. This will give you everything you need to really get rolling at full force. Once you have reached lvl 7 (which you probably should be by the time you get all those items) get at least a Crystal Infusion. If your team is ahead, sacrifice the 1000 Gold and double infusion (WP and CP infusion together) You will be massively more powerful and you will dominate the enemy team. Every time I have done this I usually get 1500 gold after the first minute with those so it isn't a waste. Please remember that they don't make you invincible though. Try to stick with your team and not 1v3 the enemy. Push the lane and it should be no trouble taking out the enemy and taking out at least 1 turret, if not 2 back to back. After this endeavor, try to keep a CP infusion on you as much as possible. Not in a slot of your items, but active on you.

From here you work your items into a Broken Myth, a Fountain of Renewal, a Metal Jacket, Journey Boots, and I want to say either a Breaking Point or an Alternating Current. However I have yet to have a match last long enough to get to this point, or even to get to the Metal Jacket. If I manage to get a match that long I will update with the path that I take. Most likely I will also get an Eve of Harvest, or a Shatterglass for the final item.

Final Build: Journey Boots, Broken Myth, Fountain of Renewal, Metal Jacket, (Breaking Point or Alternating Current), and (Eve of Harvest or Shatterglass)
