I've seen some really smart players place scout traps right next to the kraken to keep your team informed about whether enemies are making a grab for it. You don't have to leave a teammate camped by the kraken to keep an eye on it that way, and no team can kill the kraken in just a few seconds. You can be halfway across the map and almost certainly get there to stop the other team, or at least kill one or two of the wounded ones. It seems to be a tactic worth keeping an item slot open for.

Some people keep Flare Gun for that reason, but that means you have to keep an empty slot. I like to place one sometime around the 10 min mark in a corner where the kraken appears so no one steps on it and my team should have vision all game long.

Also good for if the enemy tries to counter..if there's a few friendly mines you can draw the enemy in to get the edge and ace the team so you can guarantee to tame the Kraken.
