Introduction Top

Hi everybody, I'm Peter "lookatme", the captain of Team SNOW. Today's the first guide after a long break, and I'll tell you about one of my favorite heroes – Krul. In London on Vainglory Winter Championship I got Krul banned in 99% cases, and when I took him in blind pick, I've never lost to another Krul. He gets nerfed once in 3-4 months, but he's still a strong hero.

Krul is pretty tanky, mainly due to his abilities, which give him health barrier, regenerate health, grant lifesteal, increase his movement speed, slow down enemies and reduce the damage coming out from enemies. This wide range of various abilities gives a lot of control over enemies, and your squishy carry can successfully send lots of damage to the enemies while they are busy trying to kill Krul.

I'll describe the abilities, and later we'll talk about using all this kit.

You can watch the video version of this guide below (ENG SUBS)

Abilities Top

Shadows Empower Me
When Krul stands in the bush for 1.5 seconds, he gets additional movement speed, and slows down for 3 seconds the first enemy he attacks. You can see if the ability is charged, by the green icon in the bottom left corner.

Dead Man's Rush
It grants Krul a health barrier, deals basic attack damage to an enemy and transports Krul to the enemy. We will overdrive this ability, but only on level 11, because the Spectral Smite ability is more important to overdrive.

Spectral Smite
This ability gives the enemies stacks, which are displayed as dots around the skull over their heads. Each stack reduces the damage dealt by this enemy by 6% (up to 50% at full stacks), and increases Krul's lifesteal. When activated, these stacks explode, dealing damage and restoring Krul's health. Damage and healing depend on the amount of stacks on the enemy. We should overdrive this as soon as possible. You should activate Spectral Smite only when: 1 - You know for sure that you'll kill the enemy, 2 - You can see that enemy is escaping, and want to damage him, 3 - You are too low on HP. In late game and teamfights you should never burst the stacks too early, only if you are close to death. Remember that the enemy deals much less damage to all your team while the stacks are on. You should stack B ability on the most dangerous enemy. In a 1x1 battle of Kruls the one, who uses Spectral Smite first, will normally die.

From Hell's Heart
Krul takes the sword out of his chest and hurls it in chosen direction, and the sword returns to him like a boomerang. When the sword hits an enemy, it stuns and deals damage, the longer way sword has went, the longer stun will be – 1 second if used face-to-face, 2 seconds on big distance and 3 seconds if the sword was on its way back. It's spectacular to stun an enemy with the backwards-flying sword, but good players can easily block the stun if the sword flies so long. You should try the 3 seconds stun only if the enemies haven't got a Reflex Block. Also the sword deals damage to all non-heroes on its way. Once I managed to steal the kraken from enemies, with no vision, with a sword thrown randomly to the kraken from the lane, it was very cool, but it happened only once in all the 1.5 years of my Vainglory experience, so there's no video of that... :)

Now let's see what we can do with Krul. In short, our task is to get as many skull stacks as possible on the most dangerous enemy, and blast them when we get sure that the enemy will die. Enemies don't like the stacks, so they will try to avoid them – running away, stunning Krul and using Atlas Pauldron on him. So we try to prevent enemies from escaping as long as possible. At first we charge in the shadows for 1.5 seconds, then attack the enemy and slow him down. At this time you can use the Dead Man's Rush to deal additional damage and reduce damage to you. If the target tries to escape too hard, it can be stopped by the ultimate.

When the enemy is far enough, I often initiate with the ultimate. I charge the Shadows Empower Me, throw ultimate and use the Dead Man's Rush to reach enemy quickly, then I hit the enemy and gain stacks. One more way to use ultimate is to cancel the cast of an enemy ability, e.g. Adagio or Skaarf's ultimate, if they don't use Reflex Block. It's hard to block Krul's ultimate, even for top players, because of its suddenness and big speed of the sword. Good roamer always stands between Krul and his ally in teamfight, to bodyblock the ultimate.

Itembuilds Top

Now let's look at the itembuild. We want to stack our Spectral Smite as long as possible. So we need Shiversteel, to keep enemies close after your Shadows Empower Me slow expires; defense, to keep yourself alive while stacking; and Breaking Point to deal some damage by hand.

With Breaking Point your weapon power grows with each second while you're in combat with enemy heroes. You can start attacking any enemy hero in order to launch the breaking point stacks. Breaking Point can stack up to 25 times, and when you have full stacks, you achieve almost two Sorrowblades by power. In such state Krul can kill even all three enemies.

You can counter Krul with an Atlas Pauldron, which will reduce his attack speed and prevent him from stacking too fast, so he will get almost useless until the effect expires.
