1 About me and this guide Top

Hi there,

My petal-build and playstyle is inspired by the very well done Metal for the Petal by Huxley, with a few changes within the building path that in my opinion drastically (!) improve your harassing and fighting abilities within Early- to Midgame. This guide an explanation of how to play petal and how and why to build that weapon-power-plant, that is strong during the whole game.
I have to point out particularly, that every new/and experienced Petal Player should read and know about that Metal Petal Guide cause of the vast amount of useful tipps and tricks about Petal that i won't repeat.

I would say that weapon petal is my main - not by the amount of games i played/play her but cause of win/loss- ratio i get while playing her, being able to carry my team to victory. Actually i started playing with Petal when I saw the need of learning to carry. Before that, my main was Taka who carried me up to pretty good/hotness, but when getting into higher tiers i felt weaker and weaker compared to my teammates - so I started practising a lot playing all other heros (that is as we all know, like often mentioned in the forum, the best way to learn about the strong and weak points of the other heros) and i discovered my love for that little squishy beast.

2 Early Game - Lane - General behavior Top

1 First fight

After the obligatory jungle fight at the beginning (stay in the background and focus on the enemy your tank/jungler are focusing too) go to lane or help invade if your teammates want to chase the enemy team (and that idea is not completely dumb in that situation) - Tip: keep in mind that a killed enemy will respawn instantly!

2 Lane

2.1 Pushing/Pulling

When in lane, don't push too much cause you don't want to come near the enemies turret in the beginning. (Tip: The closer you get to the turret the higher u should position yourself in lane so that you can start running away when the enemies try to gank you). In order to not push too hard:
    1. Focus on getting only last hits (it's common knowledge here i know, but it can't be said enough I think),
    2. In lower tiers (in higher tiers most of players know about that): try to keep your junglers from taking your minion mine, as you will profit twice (experience and gold) by the stronger enemy minions.
    3. Try to stay near the bush at the lower half of your side of the lane, as you can quickly go and help your team when in need.

2.2 Harassing

Try to be just a bit faster than the enemy laner cause you want to avoid the enemy minions to run in your turret as well as avoid your minions to stick at the enemies turret. Try to manipulate the enemy laner so that he misses last hits, wait for the right moment and try to annoy him as often as u can. Often, the best moment to attack is when the enemy just used their abilities for farming (like right after Voxes Double Shot or during Saws Supressing Fire etc.)

2.3 Seeds

Don't exaggerate planting seeds, your opponent will most likely crush them as fast as he can. Build a stack of 5 in the lower bush or your lane or behind your turret, so that you have a little healing station. Summon them when needed. Tip: Seeds don't grant vision, but you can see them on minimap. So, if you plant one in the passage between first turret and Jungle, and it disappears too early (the lifetime is about 2 minutes i think) you know that someone is watching you. It needs practice to get a feeling for that, but then it works fine for me.

3 General Behaviour

3.1 Awareness

My routine is to clean the lane, maybe push a bit at the end of a minion wave and then always go to jungle, giving my team more options to act either agressively or to jungle or to, as i said before, help out when needed.
Rule No. 1: Don't run into sure death - just don't.
Rule No. 2: If you can help out, you have to, and
Rule No. 3: it's your duty to anticipate when your team is gonna need you.

3.2 Playstyle

Just some short points, read Metal Petal for more!
    1. Play defensively in the beginning, harass!
    2. Play aggressively with your Core, but don't overextend!
    3. Play defensively with Breaking Point
    4. Always know where your allies are! Ping them away from minion mine when necessary, but NEVER go crazy with pings, avoid the "?" as good as possible.
    5. Be as much as possible in jungle, to help your teammates, don't stick to lane!
    6. Go for Goldmine! Getting Goldmine is more important then cleaning lane.

3 Difference to Metal Petal - Buying Path - Consumables Top

1 Different beginning to Metal Petal

The key to playing that build successfully is to farm properly, to be aware of enemy ganks and the needs of your teammates, and: rushing for health as well as weapon power.
I don't really feel comfortable while starting with an Ironguard Contract and rushing to Stormguard Banner as suggested in Metal Petal. Iron guard is quite useless for Petal, cause you lane alone and you do not get beaten by minions, and the health regen of Stormguard Banner is achieved by having the small health station of seeds and the consumption of Potions (which you have to do quite often for energy-refill and of course health regen too - during the first 10-15 minute I usually consume about 10 Potions for energy and health regeneration). That`s still cheaper than an 300,- Energy Battery, not speaking about the 1150,- Stormguard Banner.

2 Building Path

2.1 Beginning Core

Instead of Stormguard Banner I rush for Boots Tier 1, Health and Weapon Power, namely an Dragonheart and Heavy Steel. With Stormguard Banner you can farm faster with that 35dps bonus, but well, heavy steal is very effective as well while laning PLUS you can do serious harm do the enemy! You will be a serious threat both in lane and in team fights in jungle at that time. But: always remember to buy some potions!

In a good game you earn 2000,- up to 2500,- in the first 5-7 minutes, and from then on you can be way ahead of the enemy laner - so this is the time to push the enemy minions into the enemy turret (without getting your Minion Mine). Your Oakheart gives you enough health to survive ganks and to jump into fights with your direct opponent. If you feel like its not enough and you get ganked a lot, buy a mine or some flares. Staying alive for one minion wave more will get you still more gold then dying at that time of the game. Tip: I really don't know what to buy first if you have to beam home and just have gold for one, most of the time i go for health before weapon power so I can stay longer in lane/jungle.

2.2 Finishing Core

Rush for Sorrowblade and Blazing Salvo, not for Breaking Point as suggested in Metal Petal. In Midgame, Breaking Point is not that good as a fast firing Sorrowblade, Breaking Point really shines in Endgame-Fights. If you can't get your Damage on the enemy heros, go for Boots Tier 2 or Shiversteel. (Since the Shiversteel-Nerf i feel better with Boots, but that depends on the enemy builds. Enemy got Boots Tier 2 -> Go for it as well, and upgrade Dragonheart to Aegis or Crucible)
When the enemy team is squishy, upgrade Blazing Salvo to Tornado Trigger (or Bonesaw), cause it's unlikely that you will be able to build up enough stacks to really take the benefits from Breaking Points Passive.

2.3 Final Build

If the game isn't over yet, go tanky! Don't go for two crucibles, cause Aftershocks are to prominent at the moment. I like Shiversteel + Aegis (Against CP), Aegis + Metal Jacket (Against TB + Aftershock). Also have a look at your team, if theres no Crucible yet, i would always favor buying one. Or if there are crucibles and you feel like the fights last too long for your team, go for Fountain! Well - u know the rules. Don't be thrifty and help your mates if you can, either with RB or Regen, that's important, especially in late game.

3 Consumables

Never forget and underestimate consumables. There are a lot of threads only about consumables on the site, so i just want to point out some basic ideas for my Petal build:
    1. You need a lot of potions, but don't hesitate buying them: staying longer in lane will pay off! And you need a lot energy for your seeds. Although this build is weapon focused, i love having them around, and their explosions are still effective!
    2. Place Mines in the bushes at the lower side of the lane to avoid ganks. (Or think about the seed-tip I wrote about earlier.
    3. Don't rely too much on allies when it comes to flares! Think about the cooldown times, so be the one who buys flares, together with your support if possible. Especially as you are likely to have more gold then your allies. PLUS: The more vision the better you can position yourself behind the tank, as you should play defensively and build up stacks!
