Catherine's highly defensive stats and kit make her an excellent tank and allow her to sustain drawn out battles. Building upon this, items that build stacks are perfect for her, since she can take a lot of hits while increasing her damage. I've seen a lot of cases where Catherine is built with multiple defenses, but these builds tend to fall short on the offense due to inventory space. While defensive items tend to be great in this game, the enemy team will quickly adapt to ignore a tanky Catherine if she is not an offensive threat and will go after her more fragile teammates. That being said, I tried to build a Catherine that would fulfill the tank and assist role, while hitting hard enough to be treated as a threat of her own.

Building a Bruiser Top

I rush Warhorn immediately after Tier 1 Sprint Boots, and almost purely because of the faster farming. Warhorn is almost like a second pair of Boots with a faster cooldown, but its active applies to your entire team. Additionally, it provides great bonuses, such as cooldown acceleration, health regeneration, and energy sustain. Warhorn is partly the reason I avoid upgrading Boots until all other items are finished. Use Warhorn to chase down and stun fleeing enemies, run to objectives, or escape.

After Warhorn, a good choice is to rush Fountain of Renewal. The Fountain is an understated item with its defensive stats, heal, and low cost. If the enemy's damage is mostly burst (ex: Taka, Koshka, Glaive) build Kinetic Shield first. Otherwise, build Lifespring into Fountain of Renewal.

Then, build towards Bonesaw, which will provide the damage sustain, amplify any weapon damage from your team (armor shred for your whole team), and counter enemy armor. Blazing Salvo can be built before the Fountain of Renewal is complete in some situations. After Blazing Salvo, build Piercing Spear. At this point, I normally have 1 inventory slot open. In case the enemy is wrecking, use this slot to build a defense before Bonesaw (see last paragraph for selecting this defense). Otherwise, instead of going directly for Bonesaw, get Heavy Steal to complement the attack speed and armor pierce. Then, finish Bonesaw and build Sorrowblade. With Sorrowblade and Bonesaw, enemies will be forced to focus Catherine down before she causes too much damage with her stacks, allowing Catherine to properly tank and attack at the same time.

I recommend getting Aftershock after Sorrowblade because it boosts the damage of her Merciless Pursuit ability and provides cooldown acceleration. If the enemy has built shield, good alternatives to Aftershock in this build are a second defense, Tornado Trigger, Breaking Point or a Serpent's Mask.

Alternatively, a defense item can be built instead of Aftershock. In this case, look to counter the most difficult enemy hero on the opposing team.
For Krul, Glaive, Weapon Joule, get Atlas Pauldron.

For burst heroes, such as Taka, Koshka, either get Crucible or another Fountain of Renewal.

For SAW, Ringo, Weapon Adagio (not kidding), and heavy weapon/auto hitters, get Metal Jacket.

Aegis works well against Koshka and Skaarf, but is not as good as a second Fountain of Renewal in my opinion (Catherine already has a shield ability Stormguard).

In general, build shield if the enemy items are mostly blue (crystal/ability power), build armor if the enemy's items are mostly red (weapon/autoattack power).

How To Use Her Kit Top

Catherine is most definitely a teamplayer, with all her abilities having some form of utility.

Her A ability ( Merciless Pursuit) is a burst of speed followed by a stun (which I believe is treated as a basic attack). Use it to stun enemies that are running away. I often initiate with it and then save it until the enemy realizes its too late and tries to run. Alternatively, use it to make a quick getaway. If you see an enemy casting an ult (Koshka, Adagio, Skaarf are some examples), stun them to interrupt. This is often your team's best form of CC (crowd control), so use it to protect squishy teammates from bursts and diminish the enemy's burst potential. Stunning SAW and other enemies causes them to lose stacks which can often be helpful.

NOTE: I have experienced a bug where her A will not stun if activated while auto-attacking and standing right next to the enemy (must run a distance and stun). Tap away from target, then activate A and target enemy to avoid this.

Her B ability ( Stormguard) is a shield that reflects any enemy damage over 10% of her base health (items like Crucible don't count). Late game damage that hits hard works even better with Stormguard since more of that damage is reflected. Pop it when multiple enemies attack, or when an ultimate is going to hit. It interrupts a chain of burst attacks pretty well, but you should still run if overwhelmed while its up, because her B is not going to last forever. Once the build is complete, you should be able to almost alternate between B and A. Stun, pop the shield once the stun is over, and stun again when the shield is down. This allows Catherine to survive long battles.

Her C ability ( Blast Tremor) is an AOE silence and nuke. Use it to initiate or silence enemies that are chasing your allies. Also, you can use to finish off enemies that are too far away to stun but within your ultimate range.

Typical sequence:

C (silence) -> A (stun) -> Auto-attack x3 -> B (shield) -> Autoattack x3 -> A (stun)

Early Lane-Gank sequence:

Walk up and autoattack (pop B if attacked) -> A (stun to prevent enemy Boots) -> Stutterstep w/ autoattack

Stratiegic Play Top

Baiting and Facechecking
Your allies rely on you to run into bushes or into enemies to facecheck them and absorb initial damage. Stun an enemy with A to prevent burst, then immediately pop B and run to your hidden allies. You can also pop B before entering suspicious bushes if burst will kill you and then stun when the enemy has chased you back to your allies. The enemy will be out of position and this allows for an easy 3v2 or 3v1 or 2v1. Alternatively, use this strategy with your turrets. Bait the enemy to burst you. When they try to, pop B and stun them in front of the turret as it drops their health. Catherine is so good at taking advantage of overextending enemies and can turn a lot of fights around.

Stun and Silence Synergy
Catherine's stun coupled with a high damage ultimate is deadly. Examples of this are Adagio's Verse of Judgement, Skaarf's Dragon Breath, or SAW's Mad Cannon. For instance, when Skaarf is inhaling for Dragon Breath, stun a fleeing enemy and watch their health drop. Silencing a group of enemies before an ally's ultimate can have a similar effect because they are unable activate Boots or Warhorn while silenced.

Ganking the Lane
Wait in the bushes and activate A ( Merciless Pursuit)to run up and stun. Before the stun is over, move ahead of the enemy's escape route while attacking every step, as if you were kiting (stutter-stepping). If you have an ally, they should be able to finish the enemy. If the enemy is at low health and is still in range, quickly snipe using Catherine's ultimate, Blast Tremor.
Only gank enemies in the lane if they are within turret firing range or there is an ally helping you. Be careful on overextending with Catherine's stun ability. This tactic can also be used to stack armor using the passive, stun then go straight to your turret with B ( Stormguard) active.

Notes and Advice Top

Why this build?

True, there are tons of other Catherine guides, but they aren't exactly unique in any way. Build tanky and add some sort of cooldown acceleration, right? Well, I've played that way before and not only is it boring, but it doesn't show Catherine's full potential. She's extremely versatile, and doesn't need to just play tank and get assists. Plus, don't you want the kills? ;D

Why aren't there threats in this guide?

Catherine is a natural tank in pure stats. Her Stormguard (shield) ability essentially negates any damage while hurting her attackers more than her. On top of this, her stun can disrupt most ultimates if used correctly. IMHO all heroes are balanced and have unique weaknesses, but a well-played Catherine simply refuses to die unless she is focused down by multiple heroes. She is definitely not invincible, but it should be pretty obvious when you can win a 1v1 situation from the get-go. Also, Skaarf will kill anyone early game, so he's not exactly a unique threat.

If Catherine is so good, then why is she impossible to play?

Read over the "Strategic Play" section for more specific information. In general, it's because her abilities aren't being used effectively. Don't spam her abilities like other melees. There's no need to shield up when enemies are stunned. Don't use the stun ability, Merciless Pursuit, unless the enemy is casting their ultimate or getting away.

Alright, but I can't get any kills with her.

Catherine is does fit the support role well, but that doesn't mean you can't get kills. This build is designed to make her auto-attacks hit pretty hard by the time the enemy is low, and you will get kills with patience. I mostly avoid using her ultimate, Blast Tremor, as a finisher, but its range is great for sniping low enemies that are getting away from the fight.

Why shouldn't I build Bonesaw or other Tier 3 items once I have the parts?

This is a mistake. The upgrade to Tier 3, especially in the weapon category, is costly and inefficient before late game. Instead, opt to branch out into Tier 2 with the parts of multiple Tier 3 items (parts for Bonesaw along with parts for Sorrowblade). The exception is Warhorn, which you must rush for its active.

How do you feel about mines/scout traps?

Spam them in the jungle, and they quickly become a waste of money. Put them only where it is crucial to have vision; the vision is more important than the enemy tripping on them.

I thought this was not a defensive build, Why do I get offense after defense?

Essentially, Warhorn and Fountain of Renewal are my base items on any support/tank, and they allow her to go in an out of battles and use her abilities to their full potential. If you build offense early game, you will lose to enemies that have stats designed to conquer the early-mid game offensively (Koshka, Taka, Joule).

Why not Breaking Point instead of Bonesaw?

Great question. It's more difficult for melee heroes to build 20 stacks of something compared to say Petal or Saw. Also, the two items decay stacks differently. Bonesaw stacks last for 6 seconds, while Breaking Point decays per second. That doesn't mean you can't try it out though.

Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoy this build! Feedback is greatly appreciated. :)
