Introduction Top

Welcome! I've always enjoyed playing support in MOBA game. While Ardan doesn't have the reliable stun of Catherine nor the damage boosting of Adagio, he's definitely a fun one to play. It's always a good feeling to save a teammate from certain death with a well timed Vanguard and get a thumbs-up.

I'm naming this build after Alfred Pennyworth, the famed butler from Batman. He's always calm, surprisingly resourceful and ready to catch the other heroes when they are falling. And he can deliver a punishment too - when enemies least expect it.

Hope you enjoy The Vainglorious Butler!

Abilities Top

Julia's Gift : Every time you take damage, you gain 1% of missing health back. This means that the more armor/shield/health you have, the more this heroic perk does for you.

Vanguard : This is your bread and butter. It gives your target a 3 second barrier, a speed boost, and deals damage to all nearby enemies. Best of all, it also act as a teleport to your friendly hero target, making it easier to jump between lane and jungle. Maxing out this ability also helps you build vengeance to throw out more Blood for Blood.

Blood for Blood : Doesn't really deal a ton of damage, but good synergy with Aftershock. Also good synergy with Shiversteel as well when chasing down enemies.

Vanguard : This versatile ability can be used to single out one or two enemy heroes during team fight, gank an enemy laner, stop chasing enemies when running from a losing team fight, and also can be used in securing Kraken last-hit.

Items, Early Game Top

If at your level you are seeing a lot of jungle invades, you can pick up a Oakheart first since it buffs your Vanguard and actually helps combat stats. Otherwise, go ahead and pick up Ironguard Contract first and get to work with your jungler.

Remember that level 1 items gives you more bang for the bucks than level 2 or level 3 items. So use all your slots early and get a bit of everything across the board. All the level 1 items will build nicely towards your core items anyway.

Also, since you are the support - DO drop Scout Trap near the jungle shop, and in the enemy territories during invades. You are not as gold hungry as your laner or jungler, so don't go cheap and skip out on providing team vision.

Items, Core and Late Game Top

Aftershock : First level 3 item to rush. The cooldown reduction allows you to spam Vanguard more often, which in turns let you throw Blood for Blood more often also. As Ardan, always engage enemy with an ability - either by flying to enemy with a punch or dashing to an enemy already in combat. This makes the passive from Aftershock very powerful.

Fountain of Renewal : Passive heal for you, and team heal to extend fights. You would still want to use Vanguard for saving dying friendly heroes, so don't wait too long before you pop this during a team fight. I usually go for this over Crucible as the first team defense item.

Crucible : Nice health boost, and saves team from AoE attacks.

Contraption : Of course, how can you be the all-purpose-utility-knife butler without a contraption? The cooldown reduction is nice, but this item is really about conserve your inventory spot in very late-game. Don't use up all three charges at once; do save one for Flare when situation arises.

Some folks REALLY LOVE Warhorn, but in the case of Ardan, saving an inventory slot and the cooldown is more useful. I'd rather be able to spam my Vanguard more often.

Journey Boots : While the last upgrade doesn't give you more speed, it does give you more health and some armor/shield, which improves your heroic perk. Usually the last of the three core L3 item that I complete.

Shiversteel : Gives health boost, and very useful for chasing fleeing enemies when combined with Blood for Blood.

Breaking Point : Arden is about extending engagements and picking off enemies while keeping all your heroes alive, so this is a good get if team is not dealing enough damage.

Atlas Pauldron : If enemies are building attack speed - especially with Ringo, SAW and Krul - make sure you pick this up for the team. It only affects enemies in a limited range, but since you are always in the front line, you are the ideal person to carry this for the team.

Other Tips/Tricks Top

Since you're holding the contract, you'll likely be at a lower level than your teammate in early game. If team fight breaks out and things look bleak, sacrifice yourself by drawing enemies away from your teammates if you can save them. It's a much bigger loss for the team if you lose a teammate with a higher level and with more gold/farming need.

When running away with a teammate, tap your Vanguard but don't activate it, but leave the targeting circle up. Then take a diverging escape route from your teammate, but make sure your fleeing teammate stays in your targeting range the whole time.

You can drop Gauntlet for stopping enemies from chasing after a losing team fight, as well as help securing Kraken.
